Horses Rescued, Now Recovering

VAND. CO., IN - Hay and a comfortable, clean stall is the temporary home to 18 horses rescued this week. The man who owned awaits a court appearance in the coming weeks as four of his horses are still in critical care.

In each stall, there's a sign of survival. Skin conditions, like a fungal infection called 'rain rot,' are healing after a few days under the supervision of Vanderburgh County Animal Control and the tender care of volunteers like Carmen Hurley.

"It feels good to help. Upset to see what's going on or to see what happened to them," Hurley says.

Eighteen horses, some just a few months old to thin, bony adult males - are on a slow route to recovery.

"These horses are starting behind the 8-ball," says Monica Freeman, Superintendent, Vanderburgh County Animal Control.

Some of their hooves are clogged with manure. Sores cover their bodies. One male requires a vitamin shot. They're all healing as workers continue a consistent feeding routine and most importantly, human interaction.

"Everyone of them is eating well, drinking well, enjoying their new, clean stalls and all the extra attention," Freeman says.

It was just Tuesday when Animal Control officers seized the animals from Steven Duncan's property at 2400 South Green River Road. Duncan faces 13 counts of animal cruelty and neglect.

Once he makes a court appearance on March 24, he'll be issued to pay for 'keep and care' expenses or give up ownership of the animals.

"The horses may become property of the county," Freeman says.

"When you have your own horses and you love them so much and then you see what somebody [allegedly] does to something you love, it makes you upset and want to help an do what you can," Hurley adds.

Freeman estimates the average cost to take care of a healthy horse is $250 a month, but these expenses could be three-times that because of the medication and vet services.
