EVANSVILLE - Demolition work has begun on the former Evansville Executive Inn to make way for a new downtown arena.
Project Director John Kish said work began around 8:00 a.m. Tuesday on the one-story portion of the hotel on the south corner of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Locust Street. It includes the pool area and the atrium.
Project officials said Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel will inspect the demolition work later Tuesday morning. In a press release, Mayor Weinzapfel called the demolition work "another great milestone in our project to energize not just Downtown Evansville, but our whole community."
Demolition of the 10-story section of the hotel is scheduled to be completed by April 2010.
The new arena is expected to be open in late 2011.
