FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Work has begun on a nearly $900,000 project to keep acid mine drainage out of a western Kentucky stream.
The Division of Abandoned Mine Lands said earlier this week that Road Builders & Parkway Construction LLC is expected to complete the work in Muhlenberg County by October 2010.
Water flowing from a mined area in the upper Caney Creek watershed is highly acidic and contains metallic contaminants such as iron and aluminum. To stop the drainage, the company is working to fill abandoned surface mining pits, grading and re-vegetating the 20-acre area near Greenville.
