Shopping Safety Tips For Black Friday

OWENSBORO, KY - The Mecca for shopping is Black Friday. While many will focus on the deals, law enforcement has a message for something else to focus on.

"The thieves and perpetrators are looking for ways to take advantage of the crowds and the people out shopping," said Sgt. Barry Smith with the Daviess County Sheriff's Office.

One big no-no is losing track of your money, purses and wallets.  Authorities said men should carry their wallet in their front pocket, and women should not leave their purse in the cart unattended just begging to be taken.

"That's probably the biggest thing. Keep up with your purses and other items you might have," said Smith.

Using an ATM with caution is also important. Pickpockets work near them looking for a big withdrawal. Authorities said you should only use an ATM in well light areas and know your surroundings.

"You have to be conscious of who's around you. Anybody that may be strange that may be waiting for you to get that cash in your hand and take it from you," said Smith.

In the parking lots, the Sheriff's Office said shoppers should park close to store doors and remember to lock up. They advised you should have your keys ready as you approach your car; and when loading items, use your trunk first so items are not in plain sight.

So what if you bought something larger than your trunk can hold?

"Put it in the back of the trucks that may be hard to move, but they will figure out a way to remove those items from the back of your truck. Sometimes it's better off to take those home, secure them, and then come back to town to do the rest of your shopping," said Smith.
