SPENCER CO., IN - NEWS 25 has learned that Ryan L. Shelby, 32, of Rockport, IN appeared in court Friday morning for an initial hearing, where the formal charges against him were laid out.
The Spencer County Prosecutor's Office told us Shelby's attorney entered a preliminary plea of 'not guilty' on his behalf, to charges he killed his step-daughter, 15-year-old Alexis Oesterle. Shelby will next appear in court on December 18th, and a trial date has been scheduled for August 30th of next year.
Shelby remains behind bars, without bond at the Spencer County Law Enforcement Center.
Spencer County Prosecutor Dan Wilkinson said Shelby faces 45-65 years in prison if convicted. Wilkinson added, "It is just too early in the process to know whether Shelby would face the possibility of more severe punishments such as the death penalty or life without parole."
