MARION, IL – NEWS 25 continues to track the problems that have plagued a southern Illinois VA Hospital serving Tri-State veterans.
A quality management team will be at the Marion VA for the next several weeks after last week's federal report found insufficient progress in cleaning up lingering problems. The team will make recommendations to the VA Secretary.
The new interim chief of the hospital in Marion, IL says he’s confident lingering problems can be fixed, but Larry Scott, the founder and editor of VAWatchdog.org, believes the VA system is too bureaucratic and the problems are too entrenched to fix quickly.
U.S. Senator Dick Durbin called last week's report appalling. Senator Durbin and other Illinois federal lawmakers plan to meet with the VA inspector general to discuss the situation at the hospital.
Major surgeries have been suspended at the VA hospital that serves veterans in southern Illinois, southwestern Indiana and western Kentucky after a spike in deaths occurred from October 2006 to March 2007.
