OWENSBORO - Kentucky Wesleyan College criminal justice students spend the day taking aim for a job.
"They always have to hire, they always have to replace people who retire, and with cities growing in the Tri-State area all the police departments seem to be expanding," said professor Dr. Ken Ayers.
In an economy where many are laying off or furloughing jobs, why not take a shot?
"Private industry, sounds like there might be a pension but in 25 years that company may be out of business. Policing and criminal justice we never go out of business," said Bowling Green Police Sgt. Penny Bowles.
Unlike many other sectors, criminal justice is hiring. Just last year Owensboro police hired two people from the same career fair.
But just last week, Kentucky State Police announced they would hire back retired troopers. Could a move like this handcuff students?
"Military did the same thing after 9/11. They brought back retirees who filled critical positions so they could fill those positions until they had recruits trained up," said Ayers.
So today, many potential recruits tried to get a foot in the door.
"I've already picked up about three applications, so that's good with my area," said criminal justice student Seth Carden.
Retired KSP troopers have until tomorrow to apply to rejoin the force.
