EVANSVILLE - If you saw a large hot-air balloon floating around the Tri-State area Saturday, it wasn't a hoax. Engineering students at the University of Southern Indiana launched a high-altitude latex balloon from the Mount Vernon, IL airport as a part of a class project.
USI's Engineering Design and Analysis class tracked the balloon's altitude and route both live on the web and at their Mission Control center in room 220 of USI's Technology Center.
"It could be seen as a weather balloon cause the equipment we have on there. We have pressure sensors, temperature sensors, we have humidity sensors. It also has GPS points on it," Hasan Odeh, USI Engineering Student said.
An Earth/Space Science class at Reitz Memorial Catholic High School also had an experiment on board. Students predicted the balloon would land south of Montgomery, IN.
Viewers were also able to watch live streaming video of the flight on the web.
Organizers said a deployment mechanism was used for the first time. This is the third time a USI class has done the experiment.
