EVANSVILLE - Police said they arrested a woman Tuesday who tried to avoid getting arrested for prostitution by using hand gestures.
The Evansville Police Department said 31-year-old Dawnetta Powers was arrested around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday for prostitution.
According to police documents, Powers was picked up during an undercover detail on Fares Avenue near Columbia Street.
The undercover officer said he gave Powers a ride and asked her if she needed anything, to which she replied "money". The officer said Powers directed him to a motel room, where he followed her inside and she asked for $40.
After getting the money, the officer wrote in a probable cause affidavit that Powers only used hand gestures. He said Powers had been arrested for prostitution before and believed, "she attempted to skirt a deal, or agreement, by not talking and only making hand gestures."
When Powers touched the officer as if she were about to perform a sex act, she was arrested. Detectives said once she attempted to touch the officer, "it constituted an agreement for sex in an exchange for money."
