RENSSELAER, Ind. (AP) - The Jasper County Hospital in northern Indiana is getting a $15 million federal loan to pay for upgrades.

The U.S. Agriculture Department announced this week that the hospital is among 46 community facilities nationwide benefiting from the agency's latest round of the stimulus funding.

The Rensselaer hospital still has its original 1960s operating rooms and lacks modern medical equipment and limited space for doctors. The Agriculture Department says the loan will be used to build a 24,000-square-foot addition and to renovate the existing building.

The upgrades will include six new surgical suites, a sleep lab, a cancer treatment area, space for medical records and office space.

Rensselaer is about 50 miles south of Gary.
