EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (AP) - An Army veteran from Hammond who now works at U.S. Steel has been honored by the Pentagon as its 2 millionth recipient of the Freedom Team Salute commendation.
The program honors soldiers and civilians for their sacrifices in support of American soldiers. Army Col. David Griffith says that in selecting its 2 millionth recipient, Freedom Team Salute was looking for someone who was both a veteran and a noncommissioned officer.
Christopher Meyers, who was wounded in a mortar attack in July 2004, was selected for the honor. Meyers' wife, Sara, who is also an Army veteran, and the couple's two children were recognized for their sacrifice and support.
