Associated Press - June 14, 2009 12:44 PM ET

HAZARD, Ky. (AP) - Police in eastern Kentucky say an 11-year-old boy will be referred to juvenile authorities after he took a church van for a drive, smashing six vehicles and prompting police to shoot out the van tires to stop him.

WYMT-TV reports the Saturday incident began at Carr Creek State Park in Sassafras, where the boy was on an outing with his family.

Hazard police say the boy hijacked a church van and drove it 20 miles along Highway 15 through Knott and Perry counties with a Fish and Wildlife official pursuing him before police also got involved.

Hazard police officer Joe Engle says the boy pulled into the McDonald's parking lot in Hazard and began ramming vehicles.

Engle says police had to shoot the tires of the van to get it to stop, but no one was injured.
