HARLAN, Ky. (AP) - Two southeastern Kentucky newspapers are cutting Monday publication from their current 6-day schedules, citing the downturn in the economy and the industry.
The Harlan Daily Enterprise and The Daily News of Middlesboro will continue publishing Tuesday through Saturday.
Harlan Daily Enterprise Publisher Pat Lay says the change is to try to avoid passing large price increases on to advertisers and subscribers and to prevent layoffs.
Lay said the company "chose what we believe is the least painful solution." Both papers are owned by Clinton, Conn.-based Heartland Publications LLC. In stories this week, the Harlan and Middlesboro papers said other dailies owned by the company are undergoing similar changes.
Lay says the change is effective immediately.
